I agree. Forums are not very conducive to this type of discussion at all, especially given that the user base of the forums is shared amongst those who are players of the game and have no idea about the servers (and no doubt will interject with random, pointless commentary). This mailing list also brings news and updates out far quicker by pushing the stuff to users, rather than having to go and check out forums.
I seriously doubt that the interaction that occurs on this mailing list with Valve staff will continue on the forums. Sure, I guess you can have certain Valve employees checking it out, but are we going to see Alfred, Chris, Eric, Jason, Milton and the other Valve staff that have recently contributed information to this mailing list where necessary on the forums as well? For example the discussions with Chris and Milton in regards to some of the things involving Left 4 Dead dedicated servers when the game was originally released were very useful, especially given that it provided some good two-way discussion and feedback. These sort of discussions simply won't happen on the forums I bet. I'm not going to regularly check the forums as it simply takes too much time. I use mailing lists and RSS to bring stuff to me, rather than having to go out and visit a heap of sites daily.
