Agree with you, i see no link between ssh and updatetool.
But i made different tests on different hosts and with several friends, 
same issue :

"PasswordAuthentication no" slow down hldsupdatetool update process.
back to "yes" instanlty work perfectly.

I just see this ssh variable affect update. No explanation :(
