You can leave the search key, but set it to something like this:
sv_search_key xxxx;key:MYKEYHERE

where xxxx is the current version # of L4D2 (found by typing "version" in
the console. Remove the "."s when putting it in the key), and where
MYKEYHERE is your search key. That will allow public lobbies to join, and
let you find the specific server.

That, or use mm_dedicated_force_servers without having sv_search_key set.
