SM and EventScripts are both fine indeed. SM plugins are /typically /a bit more optimized by default. ES plugins are /typically/ easier to code, especially for those familiar with python. Both are a means to the same end and both are mature. Part of the reason that ES sometimes gets a bad rap is ES Tools, which is piece of exploitable, unsupported crap that conflicts with many other plugins. There are plenty of ES plugins that don't require it.
