If you experience this problem, you have an executable that is not capable of updating itself.
Replacing your steam executable (the file named "steam") with this one: http://media.steampowered.com/apps/440/linuxhldsupdatetool_48/steam should fix the problem. The only problem with the new tool was the self-update, everything else works fine. Adding -nobootstrapupdate to your command line is a temporary workaround. We'll have a real solution shortly.
