Personally i would not like that to happen, unless the porting is more
successfull than when Dod:Source and CS Source were to OrangeBox. There
was that message year or so ago where Valve said they will be getting
rid of .gcf format due to it's issues on TF2 and other Valve games but
that hasn't happened yet and i don't think there is any point for older
games that won't develop anymore to even get it removed. Not even if the
games have 40k+ users while their newest CSGO has only 20k. Some would
call that a failure and misplaced focus on playerbase and fans.
While new engine brings new things, it also requires more from players
machines (+servers) and causes issues especially in mid and low-end
machines. Source2 will propably have some fancy features like ipv6 as
default and it's backwards compatible, atleast partly with older Source
but it's also a new milestone to demonstrate new things that run on
multiple platforms on the go, not just on PC but Mac and Linux too. New
features need new games. How much TF2 can be improved from it's current
form? You can add maps, items, make people interested about other things
and reworked gamemodes (see _sd) but that's it. It's never going to win
something new.

The real question at that point is will source2 be used in TF2?

Perhaps on Source2 this might happen but not in current
branch.
