Are you using the new hlds_run? I notice the "Using Pentium II
Optimized binary" line, which isn't in the new hlds_run.

This is under the new SteamCMD system (steamcmd.sh)
  - not the old HLDSUdateTool.
hlds is bundled with libstdc++ anyway, so long as it is being
executed with proper environment variables (eg: from hlds_run),
then it should pick it up.

This work, we have a box with old Debian and we just copied a HLDS install that we fetched with SteamCMD from another box and started it and it works, haven tested playing that much yet but we are about to.

Apparently something is not right in there at the moment.

Yeah, being a "downstream" from RHEL, CentOS is always way behind
on releases. However, upgrading from 5.x to 6.x is not an option for me
- at least not without switching hosting providers. I am shopping around
for a new one, and while I am at it I may specifically jump from CentOS
to Debian - since that 'nix flavor seems to be where initial development
and testing is done for this game stuff.

CentOS has been good for me, since I was working a lot with RHEL for
a while at the day-job, and it works fine for me for the web, database and
e-mail server stuff I have. However, on the game-hosting requirement
RHEL/CentOS is just getting to be too problematic - due to always being
way behind on various component releases.

I have been getting a pretty-good deal on my CentOS host at my current
provider. But, lately they've been a bit unstable anyway (after like 2 years
of no issues at all). So, maybe now is a good time for a change.
