A more important question would be... why are you still running CentOS 5? CentOS 6 came out two years ago... and from what people have said on this list, it sounds like CentOS 6 isn't affected by this issue.

Now, having said that, CentOS and Debian both suffer from the same issue: Both tend to use old libraries. Which means, when a new server program comes out or an old one is upgraded, you're going to have issues.

Even now, the newest Debian Stable (released in July) doesn't have a new enough GLIBC to run any Source game clients. While that's only tangentially related to the servers, it does show a problem with certain distros when you can't rely on them having libraries released in the last 1-3 years. CentOS, not have a major version in the past two years, is presumably even farther behind than Debian.

As much as I dislike what Ubuntu is doing on the desktop, I still use it for my servers simply because I know I can at least somewhat rely on it having new enough libraries to run the various software I need... and I'm using the LTS version released a year and a half ago!

... I didn't realize we were this close to another Ubuntu LTS release already.

Even if it was not broken: Why CentOS? This is not a joke question btw,
honestly curious.

I'll just throw this out there in reference to the earlier spat about wahh
mines not working yours is stop gloating - why do you continue to use
centos to host srcds instances after how many times it's been broken on
there?

Literally every 3rd or 4th patch someone complains that srcds got broken on
centos. Valve tests on and runs ubuntu and there's never been a single
problem for anyone who also runs ubuntu, why do you continue to willingly
run an OS that you know there will be problems with?

Should we expect a hot fix for Linux startup fails. Eric?
