I have exactly the same problem: The error message is the same, the
version is the same, the setup is (almost) the same: To get familiar
with the processor, I too started off with VMWare. I've spend a couple
of weeks trying to make that work - to no avail. I then tried it out on
the target machine instead, but with precisely the same, sad result.
Both the machine hosting VMWare and the target machine runs fine with
other systems, so maybe there _is_ a problem somewhere?

Whew. For a while, I was feeling like a total goober. I'm glad it's not just me. :)

I've tried a lot of permutations. In case I had a bad gcc, I tried compiling on a system that had previously compiled svn-20060108 successfully. No dice. I even tried compiling the kernel without the patches, in case it was something there. Like you, I've tried without VMware as well, with no luck.

I'm not enough of a kernel wizard to know what elements of the hardware architecture are important to post, but I've tried on two different machines so far:

SMP: 2x Athlon MP
2.5 GB RAM
2 IDE hard drives
1 IDE DVD-RW
1 low-end AGP video card

1 Intel Celeron
512 MB RAM
1 IDE hard drive
1 CD-ROM
on-board video

Neither system has anything like SCSI, other PCI cards, etc.

On the other hand, I've had similar problems with a basic kernel
upgrade to 2.6.14.6, so maybe that's the culprit?

Which brings me to my last question: Where do I get hold of an older
version of HLFS? The previous version appears to be adequate for me.

What's been working for me so far is svn-20060220, but using the kernel (and patches) from svn-20060108, which is 2.6.14.3. This boots fine in VMware, and I'm in the process of building it on raw hardware as well.
