I thought about this more today. mtab, utmp, and wtmp, are empty (I think they stay that way) when we build in chroot, and I've built most of BLFS in chroot before and it never seemed to be a problem that those files were empty. So it shouldn't be a problem to use /tools/var and /tools/etc, with empty files on the real system while building. Everything would be fixed after another reboot.
So, I'll start modifying everything in /tools to use /tools/etc and /tools/var. robert
