Was this issue present in pass2 of the temporary tools? If so I am going to guess this is a problem with either the newer gcc or glibc you are using. I just built binutils with x86_64 glibc-2.11.1 gcc-4.4.3 and binutils-2.20. I even allowed the build to use Werror. It built to completion without failing.
