The Good News According to Yochanan, Chapter 18
{18:1} When Yeshua had spoken these words, he went forth with his
[1>]talmidim[<1] over the brook Kidron, where was a garden, into which
he entered, himself and his [2>]talmidim[<2]. {18:2} Now Yehudah, who
betrayed him, also knew the place, for Yeshua often resorted there
with his [3>]talmidim[<3]. {18:3} Yehudah then, having taken a
detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief [4>]Kohanim[<4] and
the Perushim, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. {18:4}
Yeshua therefore, knowing all the things that were coming on him, went
forth, and said to them, "Who are you looking for?"
{18:5} They answered him, "Yeshua of Natzeret."
Yeshua said to them, "I AM."
Yehudah also, who betrayed him, was standing with them. {18:6} When
therefore he said to them, "I AM," they went backward, and fell to the
ground.
{18:7} Again therefore he asked them, "Who are you looking for?"
They said, "Yeshua of Natzeret."
{18:8} Yeshua answered, "I told you that I AM. If therefore you seek
me, let these go their way," {18:9} that the word might be fulfilled
which he spoke, "Of those whom you have given me, I have lost none."
{18:10} Shim`on Kefa therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck
the [5>]Kohen Gadol[<5]'s servant, and cut off his right ear. The
servant's name was Melekh. {18:11} Yeshua therefore said to Kefa, "Put
up the sword into its sheath. The cup which the Father has given me,
shall I not drink it?"
{18:12} So the detachment, the commanding officer, and the officers
of the Yehudim, seized Yeshua and bound him, {18:13} and led him to
Anan first, for he was father-in-law to Kayafa, who was [6>]Kohen
Gadol[<6] that year. {18:14} Now it was Kayafa who gave counsel to the
Yehudim, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
{18:15} Shim`on Kefa followed Yeshua, as did another [7>]talmid[<7].
Now that [8>]talmid[<8] was known to the [9>]Kohen Gadol[<9], and
entered in with Yeshua into the court of the [10>]Kohen Gadol[<10];
{18:16} but Kefa was standing at the door outside. So the other
[11>]talmid[<11], who was known to the [12>]Kohen Gadol[<12], went out
and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought in Kefa. {18:17} Then
the maid who kept the door said to Kefa, "Are you also one of this
man's [13>]talmidim[<13]?"
He said, "I am not."
{18:18} Now the servants and the officers were standing there,
having made a fire of coals, for it was cold. They were warming
themselves. Kefa was with them, standing and warming himself. {18:19}
The [14>]Kohen Gadol[<14] therefore asked Yeshua of his
[15>]talmidim[<15], and of his teaching. {18:20} Yeshua answered him,
"I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues, and in
the temple, where the Yehudim always meet. I said nothing in secret.
{18:21} Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to
them. Behold, these know the things which I said."
{18:22} When he had said this, one of the officers standing by
slapped Yeshua with his hand, saying, "Do you answer the [16>]Kohen
Gadol[<16] like that?"
{18:23} Yeshua answered him, "If I have spoken evil, testify of the
evil; but if well, why do you beat me?"
{18:24} Anan sent him bound to Kayafa, the [17>]Kohen Gadol[<17].
{18:25} Now Shim`on Kefa was standing and warming himself. They said
therefore to him, "Are you also one of his [18>]talmidim[<18]?"
He denied it, and said, "I am not."
{18:26} One of the servants of the [19>]Kohen Gadol[<19], being a
relative of him whose ear Kefa cut off, said, "Didn't I see you in the
garden with him?"
{18:27} Kefa therefore denied again, and immediately the rooster
crowed.
{18:28} They led Yeshua therefore from Kayafa into the Praetorium.
It was early, and they themselves didn't enter into the Praetorium,
that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Pesach. {18:29}
Pilate therefore went out to them, and said, "What accusation do you
bring against this man?"
{18:30} They answered him, "If this man weren't an evildoer, we
wouldn't have delivered him up to you."
{18:31} Pilate therefore said to them, "Take him yourselves, and
judge him according to your law."
Therefore the Yehudim said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put
anyone to death," {18:32} that the word of Yeshua might be fulfilled,
which he spoke, signifying by what kind of death he should die.
{18:33} Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, called
Yeshua, and said to him, "Are you the King of the Yehudim?"
{18:34} Yeshua answered him, "Do you say this of yourself, or did
others tell it to you concerning me?"
{18:35} Pilate answered, "Am I a Yehudi? Your own nation and the
chief [20>]Kohanim[<20] delivered you to me. What have you done?"
{18:36} Yeshua answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my
kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I
wouldn't be delivered to the Yehudim. But now my kingdom is not from
here."
{18:37} Pilate therefore said to him, "Are you a king then?"
Yeshua answered, "You say that I am a king. To this end have I been
born, and to this end I have come into the world, that I should
testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my
voice."
{18:38} Pilate said to him, "What is truth?"
When he had said this, he went out again to the Yehudim, and said to
them, "I find no basis for a charge against him. {18:39} But you have
a custom, that I should release to you one at the Pesach. Therefore do
you desire that I release to you the King of the Yehudim?"
{18:40} Then they all cried out again, saying, "Not this man, but
Bar-Abba!" Now Bar-Abba was a robber.
