Yehoshua, starting at chapter 4
{4:1} It happened, when all the nation were clean passed over the
Yarden, that the LORD spoke to Yehoshua, saying, {4:2} Take twelve men
out of the people, out of every tribe a man, {4:3} and command you
them, saying, Take hence out of the midst of the Yarden, out of the
place where the [1>]Kohanim[<1]' feet stood firm, twelve stones, and
carry them over with you, and lay them down in the lodging-place,
where you shall lodge this night. {4:4} Then Yehoshua called the
twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Yisra'el, out of
every tribe a man: {4:5} and Yehoshua said to them, Pass over before
the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of the Yarden, and take up
every man of you a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of
the tribes of the children of Yisra'el; {4:6} that this may be a sign
among you, that when your children ask in time to come, saying, What
do you mean by these stones? {4:7} then you shall tell them, Because
the waters of the Yarden were cut off before the ark of the covenant
of the LORD; when it passed over the Yarden, the waters of the Yarden
were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial to the children
of Yisra'el forever. {4:8} The children of Yisra'el did so as Yehoshua
commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of the Yarden,
as the LORD spoke to Yehoshua, according to the number of the tribes
of the children of Yisra'el; and they carried them over with them to
the place where they lodged, and laid them down there. {4:9} Yehoshua
set up twelve stones in the midst of the Yarden, in the place where
the feet of the [2>]Kohanim[<2] who bore the ark of the covenant
stood: and they are there to this day. {4:10} For the [3>]Kohanim[<3]
who bore the ark stood in the midst of the Yarden, until everything
was finished that the LORD commanded Yehoshua to speak to the people,
according to all that Moshe commanded Yehoshua: and the people hurried
and passed over. {4:11} It happened, when all the people had
completely passed over, that the ark of the LORD passed over, with the
[4>]Kohanim[<4], in the presence of the people. {4:12} The children of
Re'uven, and the children of Gad, and the half-tribe of Menashsheh,
passed over armed before the children of Yisra'el, as Moshe spoke to
them: {4:13} about forty thousand ready armed for war passed over
before the LORD to battle, to the plains of Yericho. {4:14} On that
day the LORD magnified Yehoshua in the sight of all Yisra'el; and they
feared him, as they feared Moshe, all the days of his life. {4:15} The
LORD spoke to Yehoshua, saying, {4:16} Command the [5>]Kohanim[<5] who
bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of the Yarden.
{4:17} Yehoshua therefore commanded the [6>]Kohanim[<6], saying, Come
you up out of the Yarden. {4:18} It happened, when the [7>]Kohanim[<7]
who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD were come up out of the
midst of the Yarden, and the soles of the [8>]Kohanim[<8]' feet were
lifted up to the dry ground, that the waters of the Yarden returned to
their place, and went over all its banks, as before. {4:19} The people
came up out of the Yarden on the tenth day of the first month, and
encamped in Gilgal, on the east border of Yericho. {4:20} Those twelve
stones, which they took out of the Yarden, did Yehoshua set up in
Gilgal. {4:21} He spoke to the children of Yisra'el, saying, When your
children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean
these stones? {4:22} Then you shall let your children know, saying,
Yisra'el came over this Yarden on dry land. {4:23} For the LORD your
God dried up the waters of the Yarden from before you, until you were
passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Sea of Suf, which he
dried up from before us, until we were passed over; {4:24} that all
the peoples of the [9>]eretz[<9] may know the hand of the LORD, that
it is mighty; that you may fear the LORD your God forever.
{5:1} It happened, when all the kings of the Amori, who were beyond
the Yarden westward, and all the kings of the Kana`anim, who were by
the sea, heard how that the LORD had dried up the waters of the Yarden
from before the children of Yisra'el, until we were passed over, that
their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because
of the children of Yisra'el. {5:2} At that time the LORD said to
Yehoshua, Make you flint knives, and circumcise again the children of
Yisra'el the second time. {5:3} Yehoshua made himself flint knives,
and circumcised the children of Yisra'el at the hill of `Aralot. {5:4}
This is the cause why Yehoshua did circumcise: all the people who came
forth out of Mitzrayim, who were males, even all the men of war, died
in the wilderness by the way, after they came forth out of Mitzrayim.
{5:5} For all the people who came out were circumcised; but all the
people who were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth
out of Mitzrayim, they had not circumcised. {5:6} For the children of
Yisra'el walked forty years in the wilderness, until all the nation,
even the men of war who came forth out of Mitzrayim, were consumed,
because they didn't listen to the voice of the LORD: to whom the LORD
swore that he wouldn't let them see the land which the LORD swore to
their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and
honey. {5:7} Their children, whom he raised up in their place, them
did Yehoshua circumcise: for they were uncircumcised, because they had
not circumcised them by the way. {5:8} It happened, when they had done
circumcising all the nation, that they abode in their places in the
camp, until they were whole. {5:9} The LORD said to Yehoshua, This day
have I rolled away the reproach of Mitzrayim from off you. Therefore
the name of that place was called Gilgal, to this day. {5:10} The
children of Yisra'el encamped in Gilgal; and they kept the Pesach on
the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Yericho.
{5:11} They ate of the produce of the land on the next day after the
Pesach, unleavened cakes and parched grain, in the same day. {5:12}
The manna ceased on the next day, after they had eaten of the produce
of the land; neither had the children of Yisra'el manna any more; but
they ate of the fruit of the land of Kana`an that year. {5:13} It
happened, when Yehoshua was by Yericho, that he lifted up his eyes and
looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword
drawn in his hand: and Yehoshua went to him, and said to him, Are you
for us, or for our adversaries? {5:14} He said, No; but [as] prince of
the host of the LORD am I now come. Yehoshua fell on his face to the
[1>]eretz[<1], and did worship, and said to him, What says my lord to
his servant? {5:15} The prince of the LORD's host said to Yehoshua,
Put off your shoe from off your foot; for the place whereon you stand
is holy. Yehoshua did so.
{6:1} Now Yericho was tightly shut up because of the children of
Yisra'el: none went out, and none came in. {6:2} The LORD said to
Yehoshua, Behold, I have given into your hand Yericho, and the king of
it, and the mighty men of valor. {6:3} You shall compass the city, all
the men of war, going about the city once. Thus shall you do six days.
{6:4} Seven [1>]Kohanim[<1] shall bear seven trumpets of rams' horns
before the ark: and the seventh day you shall compass the city seven
times, and the [2>]Kohanim[<2] shall blow the trumpets. {6:5} It shall
be that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when you
hear the sound of the [3>]shofar[<3], all the people shall shout with
a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the
people shall go up every man straight before him. {6:6} Yehoshua the
son of Nun called the [4>]Kohanim[<4], and said to them, Take up the
ark of the covenant, and let seven [5>]Kohanim[<5] bear seven trumpets
of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD. {6:7} They said to the
people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let the armed men pass on
before the ark of the LORD. {6:8} It was so, that when Yehoshua had
spoken to the people, the seven [6>]Kohanim[<6] bearing the seven
trumpets of rams' horns before the LORD passed on, and blew the
trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them. {6:9}
The armed men went before the [7>]Kohanim[<7] who blew the trumpets,
and the rearward went after the ark, [the [8>]Kohanim[<8]] blowing the
trumpets as they went. {6:10} Yehoshua commanded the people, saying,
You shall not shout, nor let your voice be heard, neither shall any
word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then
shall you shout. {6:11} So he caused the ark of the LORD to compass
the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged
in the camp. {6:12} Yehoshua rose early in the morning, and the
[9>]Kohanim[<9] took up the ark of the LORD. {6:13} The seven
[10>]Kohanim[<10] bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the
ark of the LORD went on continually, and blew the trumpets: and the
armed men went before them; and the rearward came after the ark of the
LORD, [the [11>]Kohanim[<11]] blowing the trumpets as they went.
{6:14} The second day they compassed the city once, and returned into
the camp: so they did six days. {6:15} It happened on the seventh day,
that they rose early at the dawning of the day, and compassed the city
after the same manner seven times: only on the day they compassed the
city seven times. {6:16} It happened at the seventh time, when the
[12>]Kohanim[<12] blew the trumpets, Yehoshua said to the people,
Shout; for the LORD has given you the city. {6:17} The city shall be
devoted, even it and all that is therein, to the LORD: only Rachav the
prostitute shall live, she and all who are with her in the house,
because she hid the messengers that we sent. {6:18} But as for you,
only keep yourselves from the devoted thing, lest when you have
devoted it, you take of the devoted thing; so would you make the camp
of Yisra'el accursed, and trouble it. {6:19} But all the silver, and
gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are holy to the LORD: they shall
come into the treasury of the LORD. {6:20} So the people shouted, and
[the [13>]Kohanim[<13]] blew the trumpets; and it happened, when the
people heard the sound of the [14>]shofar[<14], that the people
shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the
people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they
took the city. {6:21} They utterly destroyed all that was in the city,
both man and woman, both young and old, and ox, and sheep, and donkey,
with the edge of the sword. {6:22} Yehoshua said to the two men who
had spied out the land, Go into the prostitute's house, and bring out
there the woman, and all that she has, as you swore to her. {6:23} The
young men the spies went in, and brought out Rachav, and her father,
and her mother, and her brothers, and all that she had; all her
relatives also they brought out; and they set them outside of the camp
of Yisra'el. {6:24} They burnt the city with fire, and all that was
therein; only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and
of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD. {6:25}
But Rachav the prostitute, and her father's household, and all that
she had, did Yehoshua save alive; and she lived in the midst of
Yisra'el to this day, because she hid the messengers, whom Yehoshua
sent to spy out Yericho. {6:26} Yehoshua charged them with an oath at
that time, saying, Cursed be the man before the LORD, that rises up
and builds this city Yericho: with the loss of his firstborn shall he
lay the foundation of it, and with the loss of his youngest son shall
he set up the gates of it. {6:27} So the LORD was with Yehoshua; and
his fame was in all the land.
