The First Book of Divre Hayamim, starting at chapter 22
{22:1} Then David said, This is the house of the LORD God, and this
is the altar of burnt-offering for Yisra'el. {22:2} David commanded to
gather together the sojourners who were in Eretz-Yisra'el; and he set
masons to hew worked stones to build the house of God. {22:3} David
prepared iron in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates,
and for the couplings; and brass in abundance without weight; {22:4}
and cedar trees without number: for the Tzidonim and they of Tzor
brought cedar trees in abundance to David. {22:5} David said, Shlomo
my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be built for the
LORD must be exceeding magnificent, of fame and of glory throughout
all countries: I will therefore make preparation for it. So David
prepared abundantly before his death. {22:6} Then he called for Shlomo
his son, and charged him to build a house for the LORD, the God of
Yisra'el. {22:7} David said to Shlomo his son, As for me, it was in my
heart to build a house to the name of the LORD my God. {22:8} But the
word of the LORD came to me, saying, You have shed blood abundantly,
and have made great wars: you shall not build a house to my name,
because you have shed much blood on the [1>]eretz[<1] in my sight.
{22:9} Behold, a son shall be born to you, who shall be a man of rest;
and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about; for his
name shall be Shlomo, and I will give shalom and quietness to Yisra'el
in his days: {22:10} he shall build a house for my name; and he shall
be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne
of his kingdom over Yisra'el for ever. {22:11} Now, my son, the LORD
be with you; and prosper you, and build the house of the LORD your
God, as he has spoken concerning you. {22:12} Only the LORD give you
discretion and understanding, and give you charge concerning Yisra'el;
that so you may keep the law of the LORD your God. {22:13} Then shall
you prosper, if you observe to do the statutes and the ordinances
which the LORD charged Moshe with concerning Yisra'el: be strong, and
of good courage; don't be afraid, neither be dismayed. {22:14} Now,
behold, in my affliction I have prepared for the house of the LORD one
hundred thousand talents of gold, and one thousand thousand talents of
silver, and of brass and iron without weight; for it is in abundance:
timber also and stone have I prepared; and you may add thereto.
{22:15} Moreover there are workmen with you in abundance, cutters and
workers of stone and timber, and all men who are skillful in every
manner of work: {22:16} of the gold, the silver, and the brass, and
the iron, there is no number. Arise and be doing, and the LORD be with
you. {22:17} David also commanded all the princes of Yisra'el to help
Shlomo his son, [saying], {22:18} Isn't the LORD your God with you?
and hasn't he given you rest on every side? for he has delivered the
inhabitants of the land into my hand; and the land is subdued before
the LORD, and before his people. {22:19} Now set your heart and your
soul to seek after the LORD your God; arise therefore, and build you
the sanctuary of the LORD God, to bring the ark of the covenant of the
LORD, and the holy vessels of God, into the house that is to be built
to the name of the LORD.
{23:1} Now David was old and full of days; and he made Shlomo his
son king over Yisra'el. {23:2} He gathered together all the princes of
Yisra'el, with the [1>]Kohanim[<1] and the Levites. {23:3} The Levites
were numbered from thirty years old and upward: and their number by
their polls, man by man, was thirty-eight thousand. {23:4} Of these,
twenty-four thousand were to oversee the work of the house of the
LORD; and six thousand were officers and judges; {23:5} and four
thousand were doorkeepers; and four thousand praised the LORD with the
instruments which I made, [said David], to praise therewith. {23:6}
David divided them into courses according to the sons of Levi:
Gershon, Kehat, and Merari. {23:7} Of the Gershoni: La`dan and Shim`i.
{23:8} The sons of La`dan: Yechi'el the chief, and Zetham, and Yo'el,
three. {23:9} The sons of Shim`i: Shelomit, and Hazi'el, and Haran,
three. These were the heads of the fathers' [houses] of La`dan.
{23:10} The sons of Shim`i: Yachat, Zina, and Ye`ush, and Beri`ah.
These four were the sons of Shim`i. {23:11} Yachat was the chief, and
Zizah the second: but Ye`ush and Beri`ah didn't have many sons;
therefore they became a fathers' house in one reckoning. {23:12} The
sons of Kehat: `Amram, Yitzhar, Hevron, and `Uzzi'el, four. {23:13}
The sons of `Amram: Aharon and Moshe; and Aharon was separated, that
he should sanctify the most holy things, he and his sons, forever, to
burn incense before the LORD, to minister to him, and to bless in his
name, forever. {23:14} But as for Moshe the man of God, his sons were
named among the tribe of Levi. {23:15} The sons of Moshe: Gershom and
Eli`ezer. {23:16} The sons of Gershom: Shevu'el the chief. {23:17} The
sons of Eli`ezer were: Rechavyah the chief; and Eli`ezer had no other
sons; but the sons of Rechavyah were very many. {23:18} The sons of
Yitzhar: Shelomit the chief. {23:19} The sons of Hevron: Yeriyahu the
chief, Amaryah the second, Yachazi'el the third, and Yekam`am the
fourth. {23:20} The sons of `Uzzi'el: Mikhah the chief, and Yishshiyah
the second. {23:21} The sons of Merari: Machli and Mushi. The sons of
Machli: El`azar and Kish. {23:22} El`azar died, and had no sons, but
daughters only: and their brothers the sons of Kish took them [to
wife]. {23:23} The sons of Mushi: Machli, and `Eder, and Yeremot,
three. {23:24} These were the sons of Levi after their fathers'
houses, even the heads of the fathers' [houses] of those of those who
were counted, in the number of names by their polls, who did the work
for the service of the house of the LORD, from twenty years old and
upward. {23:25} For David said, the LORD, the God of Yisra'el, has
given rest to his people; and he dwells in Yerushalayim forever:
{23:26} and also the Levites shall no more have need to carry the tent
and all the vessels of it for the service of it. {23:27} For by the
last words of David the sons of Levi were numbered, from twenty years
old and upward. {23:28} For their office was to wait on the sons of
Aharon for the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts, and in
the chambers, and in the purifying of all holy things, even the work
of the service of the house of God; {23:29} for the show bread also,
and for the fine flour for a meal-offering, whether of unleavened
wafers, or of that which is baked in the pan, or of that which is
soaked, and for all manner of measure and size; {23:30} and to stand
every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and likewise at even;
{23:31} and to offer all burnt offerings to the LORD, on the
Shabbatot, on the new moons, and on the set feasts, in number
according to the ordinance concerning them, continually before the
LORD; {23:32} and that they should keep the charge of the tent of
meeting, and the charge of the holy place, and the charge of the sons
of Aharon their brothers, for the service of the house of the LORD.
{24:1} The courses of the sons of Aharon [were these]. The sons of
Aharon: Nadav and Avihu, El`azar and Itamar. {24:2} But Nadav and
Avihu died before their father, and had no children: therefore El`azar
and Itamar executed the [1>]Kohen[<1]'s office. {24:3} David with
Tzadok of the sons of El`azar, and Achimelekh of the sons of Itamar,
divided them according to their ordering in their service. {24:4}
There were more chief men found of the sons of El`azar than of the
sons of Itamar; and [thus] were they divided: of the sons of El`azar
there were sixteen, heads of fathers' houses; and of the sons of
Itamar, according to their fathers' houses, eight. {24:5} Thus were
they divided by lot, one sort with another; for there were princes of
the sanctuary, and princes of God, both of the sons of El`azar, and of
the sons of Itamar. {24:6} Shemayah the son of Netan'el the
[2>]Sofer[<2], who was of the Levites, wrote them in the presence of
the king, and the princes, and Tzadok the [3>]Kohen[<3], and
Achimelekh the son of Avyatar, and the heads of the fathers' [houses]
of the [4>]Kohanim[<4] and of the Levites; one fathers' house being
taken for El`azar, and one taken for Itamar. {24:7} Now the first lot
came forth to Yehoiariv, the second to Yedayah, {24:8} the third to
Harim, the fourth to Seorim, {24:9} the fifth to Malkiyah, the sixth
to Miyamin, {24:10} the seventh to Hakkotz, the eighth to Aviyah,
{24:11} the ninth to Yeshua, the tenth to Shekhanyahu, {24:12} the
eleventh to Elyashiv, the twelfth to Yakim, {24:13} the thirteenth to
Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab, {24:14} the fifteenth to Bilgah,
the sixteenth to Immer, {24:15} the seventeenth to Hetzir, the
eighteenth to Happizzez, {24:16} the nineteenth to Petachyah, the
twentieth to Jehezkel, {24:17} the one and twentieth to Yakhin, the
two and twentieth to Gamul, {24:18} the three and twentieth to
Delayah, the four and twentieth to Ma`azyah. {24:19} This was the
ordering of them in their service, to come into the house of the LORD
according to the ordinance [given] to them by Aharon their father, as
the LORD, the God of Yisra'el, had commanded him. {24:20} Of the rest
of the sons of Levi: of the sons of `Amram, Shuva'el; of the sons of
Shuva'el, Yechdeyahu. {24:21} Of Rechavyah: of the sons of Rechavyah,
Yishshiyah the chief. {24:22} Of the Izharites, Shelomit; of the sons
of Shelomit, Yachat. {24:23} The sons [of Hevron]: Yeriyahu [the
chief], Amaryah the second, Yachazi'el the third, Yekam`am the fourth.
{24:24} The sons of `Uzzi'el, Mikhah; of the sons of Mikhah, Shamir.
{24:25} The brother of Mikhah, Yishshiyah; of the sons of Yishshiyah,
Zekharyah. {24:26} The sons of Merari: Machli and Mushi; the sons of
Ya`aziyahu: Beno. {24:27} The sons of Merari: of Ya`aziyahu, Beno, and
Shoham, and Zakkur, and Ibri. {24:28} Of Machli: El`azar, who had no
sons. {24:29} Of Kish; the sons of Kish: Yerachme'el. {24:30} The sons
of Mushi: Machli, and `Eder, and Yerimot. These were the sons of the
Levites after their fathers' houses. {24:31} These likewise cast lots
even as their brothers the sons of Aharon in the presence of David the
king, and Tzadok, and Achimelekh, and the heads of the fathers'
[houses] of the [5>]Kohanim[<5] and of the Levites; the fathers'
[houses] of the chief even as those of his younger brother.
