Shoval. {4:2} Re'ayah the son of Shoval became the father of Yachat;
and Yachat became the father of Achumai and Lahad. These are the
families of the Tzor`ati. {4:3} These were [the sons of] the father of
`Etam: Yizre`el, and Yishma, and Yidbash; and the name of their sister
was Hatztzelel-Poni; {4:4} and Penu'el the father of Gedor, and Etzer
the father of Hushah. These are the sons of Hur, the firstborn of
Efratah, the father of Beit-Lechem. {4:5} Ashshur the father of Tekoa
had two wives, Hel'ah and Na`arah. {4:6} Na`arah bore him Achuzzam,
and Hefer, and Timni, and Achashtari. These were the sons of Na`arah.
{4:7} The sons of Hel'ah were Tzeret, Tzochar, and Etnan. {4:8} Kotz
became the father of `Anuv, and Tzovevah, and the families of
Acharchel the son of Harum. {4:9} Ya`betz was more honorable than his
brothers: and his mother named him Ya`betz, saying, Because I bore him
with sorrow. {4:10} Ya`betz called on the God of Yisra'el, saying, Oh
that you would bless me indeed, and enlarge my border, and that your
hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from evil, that it
not be to my sorrow! God granted him that which he requested. {4:11}
Kelub the brother of Shuchah became the father of Mechir, who was the
father of Eshton. {4:12} Eshton became the father of Beit-Rafa, and
Pase'ach, and Techinnah the father of Ir-Nachash. These are the men of
Rekhah. {4:13} The sons of Kenaz: `Otni'el, and Serayah. The sons of
`Otni'el: Hatat. {4:14} Me`onotai became the father of Ofrat: and
Serayah became the father of Yo'av the father of Ge-Harashim; for they
were craftsmen. {4:15} The sons of Kalev the son of Yefunneh: Iru,
Elah, and Na`am; and the sons of Elah; and Kenaz. {4:16} The sons of
Yehallel'el: Zif, and Zifah, Tiryah, and Asar'el. {4:17} The sons of
Ezrah: Yeter, and Mered, and `Efer, and Yalon; and she bore Miryam,
and Shammai, and Yishbach the father of Eshtemoa. {4:18} His wife
Yehudiyah bore Yered the father of Gedor, and Hever the father of
Sokho, and Yekuti'el the father of Zanoach. These are the sons of
Bityah the daughter of Par`oh, whom Mered took. {4:19} The sons of the
wife of Hodiyah, the sister of Nacham, were the father of Ke`ilah the
Garmite, and Eshtemoa the Ma`akhatite. {4:20} The sons of Shimon:
Amnon, and Rinnah, Ben-Hanan, and Tilon. The sons of Yish`i: Zochet,
and Ben-Zochet. {4:21} The sons of Shelah, the son of Yehudah: `Er the
father of Lekha, and La`adah the father of Mareshah, and the families
of the house of those who worked fine linen, of the house of Ashbea;
{4:22} and Yokim, and the men of Kozeva, and Yo'ash, and Saraf, who
had dominion in Mo'av, and Yashuvi-Lechem. The records are ancient.
{4:23} These were the potters, and the inhabitants of Netaim and
Gederah: there they lived with the king for his work. {4:24} The sons
of Shim`on: Nemu'el, and Yamin, Yariv, Zerach, Sha'ul; {4:25} Shallum
his son, Mivsam his son, Mishma his son. {4:26} The sons of Mishma:
Hammuel his son, Zakkur his son, Shim`i his son. {4:27} Shim`i had
sixteen sons and six daughters; but his brothers didn't have many
children, neither did all their family multiply like the children of
Yehudah. {4:28} They lived at Be'er-Sheva, and Moladah, and
Hatzar-Shu`al, {4:29} and at Bilhah, and at `Etzem, and at Tolad,
{4:30} and at Betu'el, and at Hormah, and at Tziklag, {4:31} and at
Beit-Markavot, and Hatzar-Susim, and at Beit-Bir'i, and at Sha`arayim.
These were their cities to the reign of David. {4:32} Their villages
were `Etam, and `Ayin, Rimmon, and Tokhen, and `Ashan, five cities;
{4:33} and all their villages that were round about the same cities,
to Ba`al. These were their habitations, and they have their genealogy.
{4:34} Meshovav, and Yamlekh, and Yoshah the son of Amatzyah, {4:35}
and Yo'el, and Yehu the son of Yoshivyah, the son of Serayah, the son
of `Asi'el, {4:36} and Elyo`enai, and Ya`akovah, and Yeshochayah, and
`Asayah, and `Adi'el, and Yesimi'el, and Benayah, {4:37} and Ziza the
son of Shif`i, the son of Allon, the son of Yedayah, the son of
Shimri, the son of Shemayah--{4:38} these mentioned by name were
princes in their families: and their fathers' houses increased
greatly. {4:39} They went to the entrance of Gedor, even to the east
side of the valley, to seek pasture for their flocks. {4:40} They
found fat pasture and good, and the land was wide, and quiet, and
peaceable; for those who lived there before were of Ham. {4:41} These
written by name came in the days of Hizkiyahu king of Yehudah, and
struck their tents, and the Me`unim who were found there, and
destroyed them utterly to this day, and lived in their place; because
there was pasture there for their flocks. {4:42} Some of them, even of
the sons of Shim`on, five hundred men, went to Mount Se`ir, having for
their captains Pelatyah, and Ne`aryah, and Refayah, and `Uzzi'el, the
sons of Yish`i. {4:43} They struck the remnant of the `Amaleki who
escaped, and have lived there to this day.
{5:1} The sons of Re'uven the firstborn of Yisra'el (for he was the
firstborn; but, because he defiled his father's couch, his birthright
was given to the sons of Yosef the son of Yisra'el; and the genealogy
is not to be reckoned after the birthright. {5:2} For Yehudah
prevailed above his brothers, and of him came the prince; but the
birthright was Yosef's:) {5:3} the sons of Re'uven the firstborn of
Yisra'el: Hanokh, and Pallu, Hetzron, and Karmi. {5:4} The sons of
Yo'el: Shemayah his son, Gog his son, Shim`i his son, {5:5} Mikhah his
son, Re'ayah his son, Ba`al his son, {5:6} Be'erah his son, whom
Tilgat-Pilne'eser king of Ashshur carried away captive: he was prince
of the Re'uveni. {5:7} His brothers by their families, when the
genealogy of their generations was reckoned: the chief, Ye`i'el, and
Zekharyah, {5:8} and Bela the son of Azaz, the son of Shema, the son
of Yo'el, who lived in `Aro`er, even to Nevo and Ba`al-Me`on: {5:9}
and eastward he lived even to the entrance of the wilderness from the
river Perat, because their cattle were multiplied in the land of
Gil`ad. {5:10} In the days of Sha'ul, they made war with the Hagrim,
who fell by their hand; and they lived in their tents throughout all
the [land] east of Gil`ad. {5:11} The sons of Gad lived over against
them, in the land of Bashan to Salkhah: {5:12} Yo'el the chief, and
Shafam the second, and Ya`nai, and Shafat in Bashan. {5:13} Their
brothers of their fathers' houses: Mikha'el, and Meshullam, and Sheva,
and Yorai, and Ya`kan, and Zia, and `Ever, seven. {5:14} These were
the sons of Avichayil, the son of Huri, the son of Yao`ach, the son of
Gil`ad, the son of Mikha'el, the son of Yeshishai, the son of Yachdo,
the son of Buz; {5:15} Achi the son of `Avdi'el, the son of Guni,
chief of their fathers' houses. {5:16} They lived in Gil`ad in Bashan,
and in its towns, and in all the suburbs of Sharon, as far as their
borders. {5:17} All these were reckoned by genealogies in the days of
Yotam king of Yehudah, and in the days of Yarov`am king of Yisra'el.
{5:18} The sons of Re'uven, and the Gadi, and the half-tribe of
Menashsheh, of valiant men, men able to bear buckler and sword, and to
shoot with bow, and skillful in war, were forty-four thousand seven
hundred and sixty, that were able to go forth to war. {5:19} They made
war with the Hagrim, with Yetur, and Nafish, and Nodav. {5:20} They
were helped against them, and the Hagrim were delivered into their
hand, and all who were with them; for they cried to God in the battle,
and he was entreated of them, because they put their trust in him.
{5:21} They took away their cattle; of their camels fifty thousand,
and of sheep two hundred fifty thousand, and of donkeys two thousand,
and of men one hundred thousand. {5:22} For there fell many slain,
because the war was of God. They lived in their place until the
captivity. {5:23} The children of the half-tribe of Menashsheh lived
in the land: they increased from Bashan to Ba`al-Hermon and Senir and
Mount Hermon. {5:24} These were the heads of their fathers' houses:
even `Efer, and Yish`i, and Eli'el, and `Azri'el, and Yirmeyahu, and
Hodavyah, and Yachdi'el, mighty men of valor, famous men, heads of
their fathers' houses. {5:25} They trespassed against the God of their
fathers, and played the prostitute after the gods of the peoples of
the land, whom God destroyed before them. {5:26} The God of Yisra'el
stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Ashshur, and the spirit of
Tilgat-Pilne'eser king of Ashshur, and he carried them away, even the
Re'uveni, and the Gadi, and the half-tribe of Menashsheh, and brought
them to Halach, and Havor, and Hara, and to the river of Gozan, to
this day.
