The First Book of Divre Hayamim, starting at chapter 10

{10:1} Now the Pelishtim fought against Yisra'el: and the men of
Yisra'el fled from before the Pelishtim, and fell down slain on Mount
Gilboa. {10:2} The Pelishtim followed hard after Sha'ul and after his
sons; and the Pelishtim killed Yonatan, and Avinadav, and Malki-Shua,
the sons of Sha'ul. {10:3} The battle went sore against Sha'ul, and
the archers overtook him; and he was distressed by reason of the
archers. {10:4} Then said Sha'ul to his armor-bearer, Draw your sword,
and thrust me through therewith, lest these uncircumcised come and
abuse me. But his armor-bearer would not; for he was sore afraid.
Therefore Sha'ul took his sword, and fell on it. {10:5} When his
armor-bearer saw that Sha'ul was dead, he likewise fell on his sword,
and died. {10:6} So Sha'ul died, and his three sons; and all his house
died together. {10:7} When all the men of Yisra'el who were in the
valley saw that they fled, and that Sha'ul and his sons were dead,
they forsook their cities, and fled; and the Pelishtim came and lived
in them. {10:8} It happened on the next day, when the Pelishtim came
to strip the slain, that they found Sha'ul and his sons fallen on
Mount Gilboa. {10:9} They stripped him, and took his head, and his
armor, and sent into the land of the Pelishtim round about, to carry
the news to their idols, and to the people. {10:10} They put his armor
in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the house of
Dagon. {10:11} When all Yavesh-Gil`ad heard all that the Pelishtim had
done to Sha'ul, {10:12} all the valiant men arose, and took away the
body of Sha'ul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to
Yavesh, and buried their bones under the oak in Yavesh, and fasted
seven days. {10:13} So Sha'ul died for his trespass which he committed
against the LORD, because of the word of the LORD, which he didn't
keep; and also because he asked counsel of one who had a familiar
spirit, to inquire [thereby], {10:14} and didn't inquire of the LORD:
therefore he killed him, and turned the kingdom to David the son of
 Yishai.

{11:1} Then all Yisra'el gathered themselves to David to Hevron,
saying, Behold, we are your bone and your flesh. {11:2} In times past,
even when Sha'ul was king, it was you who led out and brought in
Yisra'el: and the LORD your God said to you, You shall be shepherd of
my people Yisra'el, and you shall be prince over my people Yisra'el.
{11:3} So all the Zakenim of Yisra'el came to the king to Hevron; and
David made a covenant with them in Hevron before the LORD; and they
anointed David king over Yisra'el, according to the word of the LORD
by Shemu'el. {11:4} David and all Yisra'el went to Yerushalayim (the
same is Yevus); and the Yevusi, the inhabitants of the land, were
there. {11:5} The inhabitants of Yevus said to David, You shall not
come in here. Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Tziyon; the
same is the city of David. {11:6} David said, Whoever strikes the
Yevusi first shall be chief and captain. Yo'av the son of Tzeru'yah
went up first, and was made chief. {11:7} David lived in the
stronghold; therefore they called it the city of David. {11:8} He
built the city round about, from Millo even round about; and Yo'av
 repaired the rest of the city. {11:9} David grew greater and greater;
for the LORD of Hosts was with him. {11:10} Now these are the chief of
the mighty men whom David had, who shown themselves strong with him in
his kingdom, together with all Yisra'el, to make him king, according
to the word of the LORD concerning Yisra'el. {11:11} This is the
number of the mighty men whom David had: Yashov`am, the son of a
Hakhmoni, the chief of the thirty; he lifted up his spear against
three hundred and killed them at one time. {11:12} After him was
El`azar the son of Dodo, the Achochi, who was one of the three mighty
men. {11:13} He was with David at Pas-Dammim, and there the Pelishtim
were gathered together to battle, where was a plot of ground full of
barley; and the people fled from before the Pelishtim. {11:14} They
stood in the midst of the plot, and defended it, and killed the
Pelishtim; and the LORD saved them by a great victory. {11:15} Three
of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David, into the cave
of `Adullam; and the host of the Pelishtim were encamped in the valley
of Refa'im. {11:16} David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison
of the Pelishtim was then in Beit-Lechem. {11:17} David longed, and
said, Oh that one would give me water to drink of the well of
Beit-Lechem, which is by the gate! {11:18} The three broke through the
host of the Pelishtim, and drew water out of the well of Beit-Lechem,
that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David
would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD, {11:19} and
said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this: shall I drink the
blood of these men who have put their lives in jeopardy? for with [the
jeopardy of] their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink
it. These things did the three mighty men. {11:20} Avishai, the
brother of Yo'av, he was chief of the three; for he lifted up his
spear against three hundred and killed them, and had a name among the
three. {11:21} Of the three, he was more honorable than the two, and
was made their captain: however he didn't attain to the [first] three.
{11:22} Benayah the son of Yehoiada, the son of a valiant man of
Kavtz'el, who had done mighty deeds, he killed the two [sons of]
Ari'el of Mo'av: he went down also and killed a lion in the midst of a
pit in time of snow. {11:23} He killed a Mitzrian, a man of great
stature, five cubits high; and in the Mitzrian's hand was a spear like
a weaver's beam; and he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the
spear out of the Mitzrian's hand, and killed him with his own spear.
{11:24} These things did Benayah the son of Yehoiada, and had a name
among the three mighty men. {11:25} Behold, he was more honorable than
the thirty, but he didn't attain to the [first] three: and David set
him over his guard. {11:26} Also the mighty men of the armies: `Asa'el
 the brother of Yo'av, Elchanan the son of Dodo of Beit-Lechem, {11:27}
Shammot the Harorite, Heletz the Pelonite, {11:28} `Ira the son of
 `Ikkesh the Tekoite, Avi-Ezer the `Antotite, {11:29} Sibbekhai the
Hushatite, Ilai the Achochi, {11:30} Maharai the Netofatite, Heled the
son of Ba`anah the Netofatite, {11:31} Itai the son of Rivai of Gevah
of the children of Binyamin, Benayah the Pir`atonite, {11:32} Hurai of
the brooks of Ga`ash, Aviel the `Arvati, {11:33} `Azmavet the
Baharumite, Elyachba the Sha`alvonite, {11:34} the sons of Hashem the
Gizonite, Yonatan the son of Shagee the Harari, {11:35} Achi'am the
son of Sacar the Harari, Eliphal the son of Ur, {11:36} Hefer the
Mekheratite, Achiyah the Pelonite, {11:37} Hetzro the Karmelite,
Na`arai the son of Ezbai, {11:38} Yo'el the brother of Natan, Mivchar
the son of Hagri, {11:39} Tzelek the `Ammonite, Naharai the Berothite,
the armor bearer of Yo'av the son of Tzeru'yah, {11:40} `Ira the
Yitri, Garev the Yitri, {11:41} Uriyah the Hittite, Zavad the son of
Achlai, {11:42} `Adina the son of Shiza the Reubenite, a chief of the
Re'uveni, and thirty with him, {11:43} Hanan the son of Ma`akhah, and
Yoshafat the Mitni, {11:44} Uzzia the `Ashterati, Shama and Ye`i'el
the sons of Hotam the `Aro`eri, {11:45} Yedi`a'el the son of Shimri,
and Yocha his brother, the Titzi, {11:46} Eli'el the Machavim, and
Yerivai, and Yoshavyah, the sons of Elnaam, and Yitmah the Mo'avite,
 {11:47} Eli'el, and `Oved, and Ya`asi'el the Mezobaite.

{12:1} Now these are those who came to David to Tziklag, while he
yet kept himself close because of Sha'ul the son of Kish; and they
were among the mighty men, his helpers in war. {12:2} They were armed
with bows, and could use both the right hand and the left in slinging
stones and in shooting arrows from the bow: they were of Sha'ul's
brothers of Binyamin. {12:3} The chief was Achi`ezer; then Yo'ash, the
sons of Shema`ah the Giv`atite, and Yezi'el, and Pelet, the sons of
`Azmavet, and Berakha, and Yehu the `Antotite, {12:4} and Yishma`yahu
the Giv`oni, a mighty man among the thirty, and over the thirty, and
Yirmeyahu, and Yachazi'el, and Yochanan, and Yozavad the Gederatite,
{12:5} Eluzai, and Yerimot, and Bealiah, and Shemaryahu, and Shefatyah
the Harufite, {12:6} Elkana, and Yishshiyah, and `Azar'el, and Yoezer,
and Yashov`am, the Korchi, {12:7} and Yo`elah, and Zevadyah, the sons
of Yerocham of Gedor. {12:8} Of the Gadi there separated themselves to
David to the stronghold in the wilderness, mighty men of valor, men
trained for war, that could handle shield and spear; whose faces were
like the faces of lions, and they were as swift as the roes on the
mountains; {12:9} Etzer the chief, `Ovadyah the second, Eli'av the
 third, {12:10} Mishmannah the fourth, Yirmeyahu the fifth, {12:11}
`Attai the sixth, Eli'el the seventh, {12:12} Yochanan the eighth,
Elzavad the ninth, {12:13} Yirmeyahu the tenth, Makhbannai the
eleventh. {12:14} These of the sons of Gad were captains of the host:
he who was least was equal to one hundred, and the greatest to one
thousand. {12:15} These are those who went over the Yarden in the
first month, when it had overflowed all its banks; and they put to
flight all them of the valleys, both toward the east, and toward the
west. {12:16} There came of the children of Binyamin and Yehudah to
the stronghold to David. {12:17} David went out to meet them, and
answered them, If you be come peaceably to me to help me, my heart
shall be knit to you; but if [you be come] to betray me to my
adversaries, seeing there is no wrong in my hands, the God of our
fathers look thereon, and rebuke it. {12:18} Then the Spirit came on
`Amasai, who was chief of the thirty, [and he said], Your are we,
David, and on your side, you son of Yishai: shalom, shalom be to you,
and shalom be to your helpers; for your God helps you. Then David
received them, and made them captains of the band. {12:19} Of
Menashsheh also there fell away some to David, when he came with the
Pelishtim against Sha'ul to battle: but they didn't help them; for the
lords of the Pelishtim on advise sent him away, saying, He will fall
away to his master Sha'ul to the jeopardy of our heads. {12:20} As he
went to Tziklag, there fell to him of Menashsheh, `Adnach, and
Yozavad, and Yedi`a'el, and Mikha'el, and Yozavad, and Elihu, and
Tzilletai, captains of thousands who were of Menashsheh. {12:21} They
helped David against the band of rovers: for they were all mighty men
of valor, and were captains in the host. {12:22} For from day to day
men came to David to help him, until there was a great host, like the
host of God. {12:23} These are the numbers of the heads of those who
were armed for war, who came to David to Hevron, to turn the kingdom
of Sha'ul to him, according to the word of the LORD. {12:24} The
children of Yehudah who bore shield and spear were six thousand and
eight hundred, armed for war. {12:25} Of the children of Shim`on,
mighty men of valor for the war, seven thousand and one hundred.
 {12:26} Of the children of Levi four thousand and six hundred. {12:27}
Yehoiada was the leader of [the house of] Aharon; and with him were
three thousand and seven hundred, {12:28} and Tzadok, a young man
mighty of valor, and of his father's house twenty-two captains.
{12:29} Of the children of Binyamin, the brothers of Sha'ul, three
thousand: for hitherto the greatest part of them had kept their
allegiance to the house of Sha'ul. {12:30} Of the children of Efrayim
twenty thousand eight hundred, mighty men of valor, famous men in
their fathers' houses. {12:31} Of the half-tribe of Menashsheh
eighteen thousand, who were mentioned by name, to come and make David
king. {12:32} Of the children of Yissakhar, men who had understanding
of the times, to know what Yisra'el ought to do, the heads of them
were two hundred; and all their brothers were at their
[1>]mitzvah[<1]. {12:33} Of Zevulun, such as were able to go out in
the host, who could set the battle in array, with all manner of
instruments of war, fifty thousand, and who could order [the battle
array, and were] not of double heart. {12:34} Of Naftali one thousand
captains, and with them with shield and spear thirty-seven thousand.
{12:35} Of the Dani who could set the battle in array, twenty-eight
thousand six hundred. {12:36} Of Asher, such as were able to go out in
 the host, who could set the battle in array, forty thousand. {12:37}
On the other side of the Yarden, of the Re'uveni, and the Gadi, and of
the half-tribe of Menashsheh, with all manner of instruments of war
for the battle, one hundred twenty thousand. {12:38} All these being
men of war, who could order the battle array, came with a perfect
heart to Hevron, to make David king over all Yisra'el: and all the
 rest also of Yisra'el were of one heart to make David king. {12:39}
They were there with David three days, eating and drinking; for their
brothers had made preparation for them. {12:40} Moreover those who
were near to them, [even] as far as Yissakhar and Zevulun and Naftali,
brought bread on donkeys, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen,
victuals of meal, cakes of figs, and clusters of raisins, and wine,
and oil, and oxen, and sheep in abundance: for there was joy in
 Yisra'el.
