While Tiago was making an editing pass through the book last week a
few things happened:
1. I had a couple of copies printed and bound at Kinko. The weight
and thinckness of 500 pages (even double-sided) was inconvenient.
2. I saw the look of panic when I asked someone to read through it.
3. I got feedback from Tiago (covartify.com) and some local readers
that I finally had time to mull over, and looked over a couple dozen
other software books on my shelf for inspiration.
4. I gave myself time to think. I reviewed the original goal of this
book from January of 2009:
“Create a full set of rock-solid instructions and tutorials so that
even a novice developer can create, revise, and deploy non-trivial
data-rich Web 2.0 applications. The user must have fun while
learning, and develop the confidence to take the next step of diving
in to learn more about Hobo, Rails and the elegant and powerful object-
oriented language behind these frameworks - Ruby.”
5. The result was the realization that this is what is really needed
I. Rapid Rails with Hobo (Tutorials) - 300 pages - Step-by-
Step Guide
II. Hobo Under the Hood - Start with what is now Chapter 7
- Reference for deeper understanding
III. Advanced Hobo Recipes (get the best from the group and
play Simon Cowell and Paula Adbul. Then ask for votes)
5. I have already made good progress on I, which should be ready in
time for the Hobo 1.0 rollout.
6. Looking for feedback on II and III.
7. Looking for recommended content for III and volunteers to actually
build and test these using Hobo 1.x
