Matt and Kevin, thanks very much for your help. I re-worked my model a bit according to your advice, and it worked perfectly. I'm working now on creating similar associations for directors and studios - you saved me from tearing more of my (already thinning) hair out.
Rethinking the model a bit, could you give any advice on the Actor picker in the form? If I have potentially 1000 actors in the table, a drop-down will be really unwieldy for users (as will 1k films when adding them from the Actor model).
