http://cookbook.hobocentral.net/manual/model#name

The comment about title and name being the default isn't in the current version of the documentation. We haven't pushed updated documentation for a while, because some of the updates only apply to edge, not the released version. That's something that we plan on fixing, but things are fairly busy at the moment.

that's excellent, I knew there'd be something! Thanks

(Out of interest, where is this kind of thing documented/where should I have found that)

Actually I think I found one solution to my own question here... you
have to call the field "name".

However this doesn't work in all cases (e.g. when I want to use a
number field for the display, or a field that has a different
        name) -
so I'm still interested to get some opinions/suggestions on this.

There are actually a couple of other ones that will get picked up
automagically (title is the one I remember) - but there's also a way
to indicate *any* field for this.

If you add :name => true to a field declaration, Hobo will use that
field wherever it needs a "name" for the model.

    Hope this helps!
