the auto generated page.

There's no magic rule here. This is an example: (http://groups.google.com/group/hobousers/browse_thread/thread/23f658ee8cf9c065/01170e14b97bd8c5?lnk=gst&q=grasshill#01170e14b97bd8c5) of something that should probably be a "start from scratch" but isn't. It isn't harmed too badly by it.

without unpacking the gem?

The autogenerated pages are in your app/views/taglibs/auto/rapid/ directory. The source code for the other tags are accessible from the cookbook: cookbook.hobocentral.net/api_taglibs, and click on "Show Source".

I am not sure what I am replacing and how
to reference it in many cases. Finally, which book would you recommend
that I read first? They both sound good, but I realize one is newer
and I am not sure if it is a follow up. Thanks.

There's a lot of overlap between the books and the tutorials (
http://cookbook.hobocentral.net/tutorials). The books use a lot more words to say the same thing. This is a good thing, so I recommend starting with the books unless you've got a lot of experience with Rails.
