Correct - originally created to manage the Linux source after the whole Bitkeeper mess. It's pretty much a one-click (or one-command) install in Ubuntu.

The first tutorial (titled "Git for the Lazy") should be enough to get you started, especially if you're working by yourself and developing locally.
