I too got started in Hobo without any experience in Ruby and Rails.
After a slow start with a couple of small applications I soon found my
feet and have developed some impressive applications with relative
ease - still without fully understanding Ruby or Rails.

One thing I found useful for working out what was going on was having
a decent debugger to step through the code and follow the various
twists and turns. I'm using Netbeans as my IDE and I've found its
debugger to be pretty good with Ruby.
