does that work in normal rails?  I haven't looks at how rails treats <%= ... 
%> but from my guess and that error, I'd assume it's treating the contents 
as a method and expecting it to be self contained with no unclosed brackets, 
blocks or the like.

for the problem with nothing being rendered, first make sure you have the 
right place and put some regular text in the parameter first.  I usually go 
with the simple <param-name:>test</param-name:> to make sure I've got the 
right spot before putting in any further content.  I don't see how what you 
posted could render nothing in that space unless the parameter was off 
somehow.
