You need to override the column view and have your if there.
<table-plus ... fields="engineer,...>
<engineer-view:>
<% this = external_eng unless engineer %>
...
</engineer-view:>
...
You might be able to prepend just that context change with no other view
alterations but I'm not sure if it will carry over to the default view or
not.
