That's strange. I am using Jing (free) that I have never had a problem with.

Jing is free as in no cost. Not free as in freedom. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jing_(software) . This confusion in English is why I use the term "libre" instead of free. Freedom is more important.

Found these that use a libre (freedom) license:
CamStudio <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CamStudio>
Capture Fox <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capture_Fox>
FFmpeg <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FFmpeg>
Freeseer <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeseer>
VLC media player <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VLC_media_player>
VirtualDub <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VirtualDub>
at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_screencasting_software

Haven't tested them but if they produce a format reproductible by free software or even better if they produce a free format such as Theora, it is good for freedom.

Hope this information is of use.
