yield isn't used in DRYML since DRYML doesn't use layouts. DRYML has much better mechanisms for arranging page layouts than the standard Rails layouts. See the DRYML guide for more details.
And it appears that you at least partly understand this, since you're using <append-head:>. I think if you just got rid of the line with your yield it should work.
