Unfortunately ckpt is unmaintained and does not work anymore with  
recent linux installations.
There are two alternatives: one is BLCR [1] and the other is DMTCP [2].
Which one can work better for you might depend on your actual setup.
If you have a recent linux installation (<= than 1 year) first try DMTCP.
