I used "(load "<holdir>/tools/hol-mode")" from that file, and the 3 
Emacs commands at this FAQ page link to enable the Unicode:

Emacs will be good, once it becomes less mysterious. Vi is also pretty 
mysterious. Both require a deeper stack than I prefer to use.

But I may try out HOL4 under Linux someday for the Poly/ML speed.
