Dear Friends -
Do you ever just "know" when something's not quite right with your computer? Ever just intuit that something is going on?
I've been running Spybot Search & Destroy and SpywareBlaster and occasionally AdAware for a long time now. Every so often, i launch Spybot and click the button to check for updates. For some time now, it has been consistently reporting that no newer updates were available. At first, i assumed that was because of installing SpywareBlaster, which runs silently in the background and so intercepts things.
But today intuition told me that it was something else going on.
I uninstalled Spybot totally. Relaunched the new version, and it trashed the firewall. :)
I reinstalled the firewall from CD and rebooted, and all was well... (Don't you love it when fixing one problem introduces a new one?)
I then launched the new Spybot - version 1.3.
The first time you use Spybot (for people who don't use it), you launch the program, and then click the button to check for updates . Then you click the button to "immunize" your system - which is a fancy word for installing the updates. Next, you click the button to check your system for problems.
Imagine my shock when it found 255 instances of spyware (note - not viruses). That is a LOT and i am not sure why it has not been catching them all along since i have been running it. Shocked, i tell you!
I noticed that the date on the version of SpyBot right after the install was from the end of March 2004, and adding in the latest updates brough it up to 5/29/04.
I would suggest to people who use SpyBot that you check your version and your dates.
The latest version of SpyBot is 1.3 and the latest updates date is 5/29.
If you are running anything older than this, you might not have the protection you need.
At least, that was the case for my computer.
Happy and safe computing.
love and peace,
joyce
PS - Lobster, thank you for the suggestion about downloading a2 to check for viruses and malware. It found 3 things that avg did not.
