HI Geek Friends -

A cautionary tale -

There is an email being circulated that purports to be from Micro$oft. The body of the message is VERY sophisticated and resembles an actual page from the M$ web site.

The language in the body reads something similar to:

"Microsoft Customer

this is the latest version of security update, the "July 2004, Cumulative Patch" update which resolves all known security vulnerabilities affecting MS Internet Explorer, MS Outlook and MS Outlook Express as well as three newly discovered vulnerabilities. Install now to protect your computer from these vulnerabilities. This update includes the functionality of all previously released patches. "

The attachment i received was named "q479623.exe" .  A search of the Microsoft.com website showed nothing named q479623.

Consider any similar mails purporting to be from MS as probably infected. Do not open them and delete them.

Microsoft is not known to send out patches as email attachments. Do not be fooled by the official looking form of the mail.

Good luck and happy Sunday to all.

love and peace,
joyce

PS - Um, remember yesterday when i said the dsl is all fixed... I spoke prematurely. :(

And the good news is that i have hurt my back (again) and so cannot climb around under the desks and on the floor to check cabling.
