Hello HolyGeek,

>Thanks for the useful link - freeDOS looks cool... What a novel way to secure a
>system - work in DOS, not Windows or Linux. As it says on one of the links i found
>there, it doesn't give hackers much to work with at all if a system only runs DOS.

It is a possibility - there is SEAL and FreeGem which are developing windowed
environments

Ariadne Browser (for DOS) is an amazing accomplishment
and I bet you can find a great wp - the only email that comes to mind is pegasus

>I did some googling on "dos firewall" and had many hits because in the context of
>firewalls "dos" stands for denial of service, so winnowing things down to the "other"
>meaning of DOS would be necessary. The link to freedos saved a lot of time.

If you google in speech marks like so "DOS Firewalls" it will look for the exact
phrase . . .

>Remember when the said, at the launch of Win 95, that dos would be history? And here
>we are 10 years later, still loading dos first.

In XP it is sometimes difficult to get a command prompt
go to Run and type in "command" (works in other winows versions)

>One of the things i like about my Fedora (RedHat) linux server, which is a dual boot
>with Win 98, is that the boot time menu has only two choices - Fedora and DOS - NOT
>WINDOWS! Those linux guys have such a sensa hoomah!
>

LOL

go here

http://www.download.com/?legacy=cnet

get Spyware Doctor -
(I found two spyware progs)

>Speaking of the word "backup" - what do people here do about backing up their systems?

Pray

I suppose I need to do one - I used to do daily or weekly
Now 3 monthly - hey maybe systems are more reliable
or I am more prepared to lose stuff . . .

>Hi friends,
>
>I just lost my entire ICQ contact-list in windows.
>(It is still there in my Linux ICQ)

Output save and move to windows

>I don't understand what could have happened. Just by starting up my
>computer half an hour ago, there were no contacts in my contact list
>anymore.

Absolutely no idea
- too many variables and possibilities

>I ran an AVG virus-scan and an adaware scan (updated both first) and
>nothing turned up.
>
>Anyone any idea what could have caused this?

I have someone who regularly turns up in my ICQ list
with messages of an unwarranted nature
- a mixture of adulation, porn and gibberish

LOL

I can not get ICQ to block this person
Maybe it is time to go over to jabber?

The thing is Desi - there are so many variables . . .

What we are going to do is have a java chat (with this forums chat)
at a time of your choosing (and everyones agreement)
then we will publicise that AND then decide on another time and place
and maybe forum and publicise that (perhaps in other places)

Soon we will have as many as 5 people chatting away . . .
