~~~ sam: I went to Univ in Ann Arbor .. quite cold sometimes. Walking at dawn the diamond sparkle snow would crunch under your feet. Later I had a room mate from No. Carolina. When we were out in winter he would say (put on thick southern accent): 'I don't know why my grandfathers ever fought for this country.?! It's so cold the polar bears all left it.! Hot coffee and great pancakes at the Union at the end of the snowy walks..Those were the days. Sam ~~~ my neck of the woods ... michigan. i went to school north of you ... ferris state in big rapids. it got COLD up there back in those daze! it's higher in altitude and away from being moderated by the great lakes. the coldest ... i got ready to leave my dorm to head across campus to an early 7:25am class ... and as i stepped out of the door ... the first thing i noticed was how clear it was. still dark ... but crystal clear and quiet. then i noticed that the breath i was exhaling was falling onto the ground ... the moisture freezing n the air and falling like snow! hmmmmm .... turned out to be -44F. that's the coldest i've seen. it would be -20F for weeks tho and what i recall as strange is ... i never wore a hat! of course i had hair then. ;) ~~~ > lob: > I have never really experienced the cold. > When I grew up we never had much heating > > However the senses are easily tricked. A cold shower will warm the body up > (or give the sensation) after the iciness. ~~~ it's amazing what we can become accustomed to ... we took -10F as being normal. i still find that the best way to warm my hands is to use them to dip out the ice from my fishing hole in the winter ... just do that and put them back in my pockets and before i know it they are all pink and radiating heat! the body is an amazing thing. ~~~ > My uncle had a chalet in the Swiss alps but we went up in the Summer. > > Scotland was meant to be cold but meditation seems to contain a tumo element. > > I know. > > It was on a motorbike coming up from Sussex in freezing conditions. > I also managed to come off (it was icy too) and snowing. > Added wind chill factor. ~~~ now motorbikes in winter ... that is cold!!! ~~~ > Actually reminds me of another time on the Yorkshire Moors. > It was cold and snowy AND the sole fell off my boot. > Not a good situation. I was on my own and it was too far to > hop - and far too dangerous. It was also getting dark. > Luckily I had some tape and was able to tape the sole on. > > I got back with a wet and cold foot but hey - I got back > - survivability on the moors is rarely fun in winter. ~~~ trying to envision a lobster hopping. ;) for me ... that damp, windy, hanging right around freezing weather is the coldest ... cuts right thru a person. and we usually aren't prepared ... and hypothermia can reach out and grab you in those times. when it is really cold ... we dress accordingly and take precaustions. we learned to have the trunk (bonnet) ;) loaded with our winter survival gear ... as having a breakdown in winter could be the last thing you would do. ;) ~~~ > I have been on the moors where wind burn makes it impossible to walk > without artic equipment or a flock of sheep to look after . . . > > > Lob drinking warm tea > > PS have been roasting your splash man on the peace wiki @-) i see. he looks hot! i always like to see how you color them up. -ts- ------------------------ Yahoo!
