ts, the person with "control issues" is YOU.
Someone (Lobster??) posted a pretty visual icon and
you deleted it and replaced it with a text
explanation.
You said that "no one knows what it is"
Then you said that people need to be guided.
ts, the people there are adults. They do NOT need
anyone to guide them, and if they need help, there are
ample avenues for people to request it.
Then you call ME a control freak.
You state that people are incapable of using a simple
button on a page without GUIDANCE from you...
You are imposing your 'help' on people when they have
not asked for it. Do you realize that is what you are
doing?
I think your intentions are probably honorable in that
regards, but think about it.
People there are not children who need guidance. If
people ask for help that is fine... BUT to impose help
when NONE has been requested is ... what?
And that is the crux of much of the problem there -
you have assumed the mantle of giver of guidance.
To impose "help" when none has been requested is to
project lack onto people... you are saying that people
lack the intelligence or curiousity or [insert quality
here] to use a simple web page... and you are saying
that you are the one to guide them.
People sometimes like to click on buttons and see what
happens... there is JOY to be found in discovering...
there is mastery to be found in trying and learning
new things on one's own. Even with our own children,
we need to let them learn many things on their own.
The example of the icon we are talking about is a
silly one but it says something. Lob posted a
mysterious icon and you felt the need to delete it and
replace it with "words" explaining what the icon was
for. Do you also give away the ending of movies to
people? Do you put a label on the outside of Christmas
presents detailing the contents of the box?
Why remove a cute picture icon and replace it with a
text description? Why not let people experience the
fun of discovering things on their own?
Why not let people come to you and ask for help?
Instead of imposing it unilaterally?
I don't mean to sound harsh here, i am not feeling
harsh. I just feel that people don't need you to
interpret every little thing for them. Let people
discover and contribute on their own.
