Ah, I thought you were trying to distinguish routers from hosts, where "hosts" 
don't have the magic in them.

FWIW, the most common boxes I see have two or more Ethernet ports and some 
Wi-Fi.  I don't want to pay for another interface, especially if it's intended 
to be one-time use.  So, if in-line is the only method one has for putting the 
Magic Key on the device, are we talking about (t)FTP?  That doesn't sound 
easier than a GUI to me.  Or do we need to describe or find another method for 
Magic Key discovery and retrieval?
