I was at a conference just outside Minden, FRG in the early 1990s.
Participants include US, Brit, Belgique, German, Dutch and a few
French "observers." The venue provided simultaneous translations for
all the presentations.

One of the Brit presenters decided in the spirit of interoperability
gave his talk in German. He started with a joke that must have been
pretty good. We never found out, the German English translator broke
into a fit of laughter at the punch line and didn't stop for several
minutes. At which point the translator was only able to explain
between laughs, "well in English it's about the same thing.".
