Interesting, it explains the European approach.

I wonder why it isn't adapted here? Maybe a lack of acceptance of the
hyphenated name?

This was his correct name, double name. His father added Bartholdy to his
family name Mendelssohn to honor his brother-in-law and to distinguish the
name from other branches of the family. Felix´ grandfather was the
philosopher & jewish reformer Moses Mendelssohn, his father was the banker
Abraham Mendelssohn. His mother Lea was also the daughter of a banker
(Salomon, Berlin). Hope this helps.

We have the very widely distributed names Mueller, Schmidt & Mayer. So these
folks often add the place name to their names: Mueller-Thurgau (wines),
Schmitt-Isserstedt (conductor) or even Mayer-Muellersleben or fathers, place
& mothers name together like Mayer-Mueller-Schmidt(if divorced & remarried
???)-Ruedesheim.
