Dear friends in the horn community

Some of you may know that my vision had been dwindling over the last years. In
November and in January I have undergone eye surgery, which has restored my
vision to amazing degrees for which I am most grateful. There still are issues
with eye coordination, but I can read with both eyes again.

This wonderful fact has taken me back into composing and arranging. Here I want
to introduce a very beautiful piece of music found while browsing for something
else on the web:

Ludwig van Beethoven: Duet #1 in C major for clarinet and bassoon.
Here edited by Klaus Bjerre in 17 versions in several keys for several
permutations of orchestral and band instruments including concert, alto, & bass
flutes, oboe & English horn, Bb soprano & bass clarinets, bassoon, soprano,
alto, tenor, & baritone saxophones, horn in F, Wagner tuba in F, euphonium,
bass tuba, contrabass tuba, violin, viola, and cello. Notation in orchestral
and brass band styles. The versions within each key are to some degree
compatible. Please read the introduction.

I wanted to make a version for horn and bass tuba for a married couple in the
Jackson-Mississippi symphony. Quite challenging for the tuba, but my friend has
a small Yamaha F. And then I found out that the tuba part was within the range
of my 28D and of my Hoyer Wagner tuba in F. So I made another version for
either two horns in F or for horn and Wagner tuba. I don’t have any experiences
with writing for Wagner tuba. So I wrote the quite low part in a mix of treble
and bass clef notation and sent it to William Melton. He found the notation
right, so I uploaded it to my Yahoo based project about free music. These two
versions are in Bb major, which I chose as the best compromise the better
projection in C and the better endurance in Ab.

There is a version in C for English horn and bassoon. Very strong horn players
may get away with doing that version.

If you are not a member of my groups already please identify yourself by name
and membership of one of the horn lists. You then will be approved as soon as
possible.

Klaus
