Mahler no. 5 has been premiered - not in Vienna - 1904 in Cologne, Max Hess
playing first horn & the obligato in the Scherzo. Well, Mahlers favorite horn
player was Karl Stiegler, whom he took with him for the obligato part (means
solo part !!! it is like a concertino for horn), when he conducted this
symphony in Brno & other places.

When I played this symphony on many occasions, horn 5 took over the first part
in the orchestra. Why ? The 5th horn usually is the deputy solo horn here in
Europe. We do not use an assistant, except in Vienna. I had my music stand in
the back of the horn section, but elevated, so I could play standing, holding
the horn in a manner similar to Dennis Brains posture. What an enormous
acoustical & optical effect. The free held horn allows a much wider sound than
in seated position. Try it & be convinced. (side effect: you will need much
less power than playing it seated, but you will sound like a rising sun !!!).
And, we were entitled to an extra honorarium "as a soloist". Not bad.
