John, I too had my lung checked for capacity or strength or both after a five bypass surgery. The device I used was a VOLDYNE. Using this I had to draw in a deep breath through a tube which showed the volume of my lung. For the first week after I could only show 1000ml. It took one or two weeks to draw in 2500ml, (the top of the scale) I don't know what my capacity is now after four or five years after, but i am still having trouble holding the same note for ten or fifteen measures as the forth horn in a concert band.
