I went to high school with his daughter. However, I didn't realize till the last couple of years that her dad had played horn, much less that he was part of that tragedy. Jeff Girdler, one of my teachers, joined the Navy Band quite a few years after this event and played with them till retirement. He told me that everyone in the band was severely shaken by it even many, many years after. My friend from HS is getting a bcc: of this so she knows about the article. I'm avoiding mentioning a name to respect her privacy.
