Albert Heitzinger, student of my father & successor as teacher at the Bruckner Conservatory, has a extensive collection of the Vienna Philharmonic recordings. He just told me on the phone few minutes ago, that this Mahler 5 under Scherchen is not played by the VPO, but by the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera, a big difference, as this is mainly the orchestra of the Vienna Volksopera (the 2nd opera house in Vienna). Friedrich Gabler told him, that he played this recording. BTW, Friedrich Gabler had the great honour, that the (now) Empress of Japan played the piano part in his special solo recital for the palace. A great honour indeed. Gabler taught horn & chamber music at the Vienna academy for many years. He studied with Freiberg as myself also. Gabler also edited many of the horn publications of Doblinger Verlag in Vienna.
