You're barking up the wrong tree. You need to do your research on the recording bulletin boards like <http://recording.org/forum.php> or <http://www.prosoundweb.com/forums/>.
99% of horn players including the LA session guys don't know squat about preamps or microphones or patterns. Some of them may have observed what is used on them but that doesn't equate to knowing the how and the why. For instance, there are advantages and disadvantages to all the coincident and near coincident stereo techniques. What works well in a given situation will depend on parameters not apparent in your question. The Jack Attack!
