While I echo Hans' sentiment (I try to keep my Facebook friends to true
close acquaintances), everyone should understand that many of these
types of requests are automated. Facebook, for example, can send a
message to EVERYONE in your email address book and request that you join
Facebook if you haven't already. Since many email programs/services
automatically add every person to your address book automatically if
you've ever sent them a message, Facebook (and others) will send a "join
Facebook" solicitation to a number of frequent horn list contributors
when another horn list member joins Facebook.

It's (sadly) best to treat these invitations as spam. While the
invitations may have been sent semi-intentionally when the new Facebook
user allowed Facebook to scour their address book, they were probably
not sent deliberately to any individual person in any personal way. It's
just a testament to how impersonal social networking has really become.

The big-name social media sites like Facebook do have a "don't send any
more requests" link at the end of the email which seems to work.
