Dear Sandra, I enjoyed your pithy comment on the horn list (see below). You did a great job summing up the issues of the difficult circular debate on auditions!
I've also been meaning to write you to say how much I enjoyed your presentation on MelloCast. It was wonderful to hear your voice, get a glimpse of your personality and learn more about your background. Way cool! Your declipline & approach has been exemplary for me. I used to rush through my BE exercises condensing them to 7 or 8 minutes a day, so I could dedicate more time to the "real" music. Then almost two years ago, I read a list comment you wrote stating that you spend about 30 minutes a day on BE exercises. "Hmmm," I thought, "that must be the difference between a pro and an amatuer -- how they prioritize their practice time!" I've always been a compulsive practicer, but I used to rush through the basics so I could get to the "real" music. But after reading what you wrote, I changed my priorities. I decided, to no longer rush through the basics. I began by dedicating more quality time to each and every little detail of the BE exercises and lip slurs and it's paying me big, big dividends. I now spend at least 1 and often 2 hours a day on BE, lip slurs, scales, drills before I even touch my "real" music. Now my "real" music is much better because I have a more solid foundation of fundamentals that I can build upon. Funny how that works. Wow, the magic of practice.... works every time it's tried! HA HA HA! Thanks for all you contribute to the horn community. Just so with auditions.
