I would like to thank William for starting the discussion about objective/subjective aspects of auditions. I read a lot of pro's and cons but I think it is still one of the few job interviews that exist wheee you can really show what you can and I think this is far more objective than job interviews for "normal" jobs. With regard to transposing: You will learn this by doing and practicing. I still prefer a good player with a beautiful singing tone and musicality that does not have this skill, than a bad player with an awfull tone and lack of musicality but with excellent transposing skills. Teaching to transpose is much simpler than turning somebody into a good player. Regards, Ger Otten BTW: 1. I did a lot of auditions when I wass younger and I always got the job (just to brag a little bit !!!) 2. Jasper de Waal, solohorn of the concertgebouw orchestra recorded the Haydn horn concertos: - Concerto for Horn no.1 in D major Hob. VIId:3 - Concerto for Horn no. 2 in D major Hob. VIId:4 - Divertimento a Tre Hob. IV:5 - Adagio and Allegro Molto for Horn and Trombone from Serenade in D major (together with Jörgen van Rijen trombone). In february there were auditions for the other solo horn place, because Jakob Slagter left the orchestra. I do not know if they hired someone. And there a will also be auditions in the fall of 2010 for two solo trumpets. So you might still have the time to switch from horn to trumpet.
