At the outset I should show my colours - I am primarily a teacher of horn,
but I do quite a lot of freelance work as well. I also help out with a
couple of (good) amateur orchestras when required.

Rehearsals:
It seems to vary from country to country. In England in freelance
orchestras we usually meet for the first time on the day of the gig,
rehearse all afternoon and perform in the evening. Sometimes, if there's
not time in the rehearsal, we sight- read on the night (although usually in
such cases, we've all played the piece before, but not with this conductor -
we watch and follow.

(On one freelance gig I did, the council had closed all the approach roads
to Chester and, despite parking on the outskirts of town and running in, we,
at 3.00 were the first to arrive for a 2.00 rehearsal. When about half of
the orchestra were there,at about 4.00, we rehearsed a couple of corners
and, apart from that, sight read the entire concert on the night.)

When I worked for a short time in France, they wanted lots of rehearsals (at
the end of which we were no better than we'd been after the first rehearsal,
in fact occasionally we were worse because we were bored.)

I cannot comment on the rehearsal schudules of full time pro orchestras

Cheers,

Lawrence
