Does it have to be clipon? Clip on microphones sound like crap on french horns. It's the wrong sound altogether. Also, you are correct. You want a flat response microphone. Many cheap microphones have a bad bump in the 2k range or 12k range or both in order to make the appealing to some folks. Also, be aware of low end roll off.
