I was extremely fortunate to have spent the last week with the Baltimore
Symphony during their inaugural Academy. The BSO worked with a grant to get
the program started, The grant covers the first three years. I believe the
original intent was to appeal to musicians who had completed the formal
education and allow them to spend a week with a major symphony. As it
turned out the response tended more toward people who had some level of
training but had decided to follow other careers. There were others who did
fit the original demographic.

The week started with section work guided by the BSO's principal horn.
Tuesday was a full rehearsal with Marion Alsop. We we were given Pines of
Rome and Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances for performance pieces. Basically
the Academy participants doubled the BSO. The BSO members also offer
coached chamber music sessions in the evening.

>From my point of view it was a challenging and rewarding week. I left with
some new concepts and lots more thing on my "to do" list building my
ability.

The folks of the BSO, can't say enough about them. They were professional,
knowledgeable and patient. Their willingness to spent time helping horn
players learn the craft made the week.
