"Depending upon which school of Music you're going to attend, I would contact
you future Horn Prof. and ask if has any particular kind of horn he/she perfers
their students to play on."
I have checked, and he has no exact preference. It is the horn that the
student can make the best sound they can on, and with the ability to make
different tone qualities on the situation. The 8 horns between the top
orchestra and band use an arsenal of different instruments.

"It's too bad you weren't able to attend an IHS Symposium where you could
meander into the "loud" room and play as many different kinds of horns as your
heart desires."
I've always wanted to go to one of those..I'm just going to wait until it comes
into the mid united states again so a trip wouldn't cost a fortune.

"You may also want to ask yourself "Do I really need a triple"? Especially when
a college education is so very expensive. Most of the literature you will study
will lend itself well to a double, a triple would be to put it in car terms
like driving a Ferreri when a Chevy will do just as well."
I do say I like your analogy here. Anyways, the reason I tried triples was
because those were all I had to try. They just seemed to work wonderfully.

"Try a different horn, but try it for a few weeks. [...] Many people find that,
although a different mouthpiece or horn seems
to instantly solve most of their playing problems, those problems, plus
others, appear after a few days or weeks with the new gear. I'm not saying you
won't still love the Paxman, but don't be sure about that until you've had time
to really see how it works for you."
This is one of my problems. I haven't been able to really test it for a
while...only for like 5 minutes tops because of the reasons I mentioned in my
original post.

I thank you all for your thoughts and opinions, including some off list
responses.
I'm going to look at the quest differently now, and try some of the ideas
suggested.
Thanks again,
John Stacy
