There's a reason for that. It has to do with the taper of the leadpipe and the taper of the mouthpiece shank. It has to match up, and not all mouthpiece tapers do this on all horns. The first place to stop for education is Tom Greer who believes that mouthpieces are horn and player specific. But when you call during the appointed hour he asks about the horn first .
